A mathematician, a biologist and a physicist are sitting in a street café watching people going in and coming out of the house on the other side of the street. First they see two people going into the house. Time passes. After a while, they notice three people coming out of the house. “The measurement wasn’t accurate,” says the physicist. “No, no,” says the biologist, “they have reproduced.”...

150 human animal hybrids grown in UK labs: Embryos... →
savageinasuit: Scientists have created more than 150 human-animal hybrid embryos in British laboratories. The hybrids have been produced secretively over the past three years by researchers looking into possible cures for a wide range of diseases. The revelation comes just a day after a committee of scientists warned of a nightmare ‘Planet of the Apes’ scenario in which work on...

Time to end chimp studies
Time to end US chimp studies As a physician, medical educator and former animal researcher, I agree that the US national discussion of chimpanzee experimentation should go beyond simple husbandry issues (Nature 474, 252; 2011). For ethical and scientific reasons, it is time for the United States to join other developed countries in ending invasive experiments on chimpanzees.  We now know a great...

6 Week Scientific Direction Meeting
I meet with my supervisor once every 6 weeks for one half hour for scientific direction. Yes. I am expected to create my own project, design my own experiments and present the data. Scientific direction means I’m told which of my ideas could have been though of by a 12 year old handicapped primate.  That being said, my first meeting went well.

PNAS Study Shows Love Reduces Pain...
PNAS impact factor: 9.771 and what seemingly is a great article showing that when you think of a loved one your reception of pain decreases significantly.  Actually reading the article however, you might notice that the data is not significant. Actually a lot of it kind of looks like crap. They managed to publish this data in PNAS because the PI is a MEMBER of the Proceedings of the National...

I hate Toronto. →
kittenkissesxoxo: jennohfurr: The article covers a few reasons why, but truthfully I’ve never felt at home here. *note: I don’t drink, so I’m not too fond of Montreal either. montreal IS fun  even if you don’t like alcohol drink the coffee instead.  except here they call it “espresso”  espresso is infinitely better than coffee. It’s total yumyum and makes me feel like superman....

Social Neuroscience: Less bullshit than...
A recent Nature letter identifies differential brain activity patterning using magnetic resonance imaging from people brought up in an urban/city environment. Results link risks to higher stress leading to anxiety and schizophrenia to urban upbringing based on patterning in two brain regions: the amygdala and perigenual.  All in all, great approach to answering a question that is not complete...
